Katherine Field & Associates Landscape Architects of Newport, Rhode Island, received a Gold Award from APLD for their "Bridge House" project. The property includes a steep slope along a rocky coastline, and the clients wanted a new pool and spa, along with entertaining areas to accommodate 150 people, a play area for children, and strong connections from outdoor areas to the residence.
Plant and hardscape materials were selected for their suitability to saltwater and wind, and the designers also adapted the landscape plan to go along with the huge scale of the bridge, the bay, and the sky.
The designers installed safety lighting at changes of grade and at steps, and lighting was also used as a design element: frosted glass and lights from under wall caps of granite slabs and steps, and fiber optic lighting in the bottom of the pool echoes constellations in the sky on the clients' wedding anniversary.
The pool is also a centerpiece of the design. The bottom is paved with handmade Italian glass tile in a radial pattern, and it's also punctuated with 100 fiber optic stars, each encircled with 24 carat gold tiles. There are bronze grill covers for outdoor speakers; bronze fencing, gates and fence latches, and a bronze hood and frames for waterfalls.
Native plantings were installed around the perimeter of the design, and ornamentals were located closer to the house. The landscape architects collaborated closely with interior designers, the architect, artists and contractors to create this gorgeous landscape.
