This book is not a guide to NYC Gardens … but to those many public spaces that offer respite from the city:  urban parks, squares, and circles; esplanades along the water and islands; cemeteries and indoor atriums. 

In Guide to New York City Urban Landscapes (W.W. Norton & Company, 2013), authors Robin Lynn and Francis Morrone profile the best public spaces throughout the city's boroughs, with info on their history & design, plus hours and directions.  And there's also info on public restrooms and nearby places to eat.

 As journalist & author Pete Hamill puts it in the introduction, "… I wanted to cheer the visionaries, designers, architects, and urban landscapers who have given us such wonders as the High Line in Manhattan, the new lushness of of Randall's island, the planning for Roosevelt and Governors Island, plazas, circles, and atriums that have added the presence of nature and beauty to the most crowded city in the United States."
